Three All-Staters and a 4th Place for Westmont
Posted: 11/08/2009
Sara Barry secured her place in the record books as she earned All-State honors for Westmont at the IHSA State Cross Country Championships in Peoria on Saturday. Barry toured the course at Detweiller Park in 18:39 to place 15th overall. "Sara ran a near perfect race" said coach Steve Wolf. "She got a very good start and just held with the lead pack as long as she could. She had to battle through the middle part of the race to hold her position and then had a great kick at the end to catch two more runners down the stretch." Barry's place and time put her in an elite group of Westmont runners who have earned such honors over the years. "Sara not only knows the competition she is running against in the race, she also knows our history and who has run before her." said Wolf. "It helps her to set goals for herself. It motivates her."
Senior Kevin Barnacle led the entire field through the first mile in the boys race but was eventually caught by teammate Henry Arndt as the pair earned All-State honors finishing in 3rd and 4th place overall and leading their team to a 4th place finish. "Those were two of the gutsiest races I've ever seen" said Wolf. "I was surprised when I heard Kevin's name announced as the leader at the mile mark. But I wasn't surprised when I saw Henry and Kevin together up front coming down the stretch. They've run up there all year." Despite the heroic efforts of Arndt and Barnacle the Sentinels came up 10 points short of securing a trophy, finishing with 185 points to third place finisher Carlinville's 175. Sterling Newman was first with 122 followed by Canton with 123. "We knew going in it was going to be close" said Wolf. "There were five strong teams all with the potential of winning the meet." This was Westmont's fifth straight appearance at the state finals finishing in 7th both in 2005 and 2006, 12th in 2007 and 2nd last year. Morris Jaspers finished 68th (16:44), Scott Dvorak 76th (16:49), R.J. Pleva 104th (17:14), Ray Honore 106th, (17:16) and Pat Robertson 127th (17:33). "We'll certainly miss Kevin and Ray next year due to graduation but we'll have everyone else back so we'll just have to make another run for it!"

Posted: 11/01/2009
The Westmont boys cross country team continues to close the gap on their opponents as they finished second in the Aurora Christian Sectional Saturday just nineteen points behind the winner, Sterling Newman Catholic. The Sentinels were led by senior Kevin Barnacle in second place with a time of 15:40. "The early season polls had us ranked very high but we struggled to run as a complete team all season" said coach Wolf. "Now we are starting to run like a team that can compete for the top spot." Last year the Sentinels finished second at state and return six of those seven runners. "When each man runs the race he is capable of, we will be a tough team to beat."

Lady Sentinels Just Miss State
Posted: 11/01/2009
The Westmont girls cross country team came within one point of realizing their goal of making it to State this year but were turned away as they finished in 6th place at the Aurora Christian Sectional on Saturday. The Sentinels tallied 190 points to finish behind 5th place Byron's 189. Winnebago won the meet with a score of 88, followed by Oregon with 117, Aurora Christian 157 and Rockford Lutheran 177. "I told the girls I was not disappointed in them, in their effort or in their performance today" said coach Steve Wolf. "I was just disappointed in the outcome for them because I know how hard they have worked all season and how much they wanted to make it to State this year."
Sophomore Sara Barry will represent the lady Sentinels in Peoria next weekend as she finished fourth overall in a time of 18:47 to qualify as an individual for the State meet held at Detweiller Park in Peoria. "Sara just missed qualifying last year as a freshman, so she was really motivated to make it this year" said Wolf. "She is running really strong right now and could challange for a top ten spot at state."

Wesmont Cross Country Sees Double
Posted: 10/25/2009
On a rain soaked field with plenty of mud the Westmont Cross Country team scored another double victory Saturday winning the IHSA class 1A Regional titles for both the girls and boys. The last time Westmont won both titles was in 1994. The lady Sentinels started the day cruising to an 18 point victory over runner up Chicago Latin. Sara Barry led the Sentinels with a second place finish in a fast time of 18:24 for the 3 mile course. Then came the "pack" with Yezenia Tenorio (9th, 20:18), Kate Arndt (10th, 20:19), Greta Sauciunaite (11th, 20:20) and Caroline Smrokowski (13th, 20:30). Erica Tenorio (21st, 21:08) and Maureen Bailey (22nd, 21:13) added to the Westmont win. "The girls deserve a lot of credit for this win" said coach Steve Wolf. "We had some girls running a little under the weather today but they battled through it and brought home a victory"
In the boys race Westmont edged out Chicago Latin by only 10 points to earn their fourth straight regional title. Senior Kevin Barnacle led all runners with a very fast time of 15:21. Barnacle was supported by the efforts of teammates Scott Dvorak (9th, 16:11), Morris Jaspers (11th, 16:19), R. J. Pleva (16th, 16:42), Patrick Robertson (21st, 16:59) and Ray Honore (30th, 17:19). "I was a little worried when Henry (Arndt) dropped out at the mile with severe stomach cramps" said Wolf. "But the other guys stepped up and held it together. That's what being a team is all about."
Both teams will compete in next weekends Sectional meet in Aurora with the top five teams qualifying for a trip down state.
