COD Field Trip
Posted: 03/11/2010
The WHS Guidance Department sponsored a field trip to the College of DuPage today, March 11th. Many seniors elected to participate in this trip, which included presentations about COD admissions, special programs, and financial aid.
Students also had the opportunity to hear a special presentation about COD Field Studies, which is an academic program at COD offering credit courses that combine classroom work with empirical field experience. For more information about this program, please click here.

We would like to especially thank Rio Almaria, COD Admissions Specialist, for facilitating this event. At this time, Ms. Almaria is strongly encouraging ALL WHS SENIORS who are planning to begin classes at COD in the FALL 2010 semester, to take their required placement exams during the month of March. Completing this requirement is critical prior to beginning the registration process on April 5th.
The WHS Guidance Department fully supports and agrees with this recommendation. The sooner placement tests are completed, the sooner students can begin planning their fall semester schedules at COD. Spring break is an excellent time for seniors to take these exams.

Ms. Almaria is also the sponsor of the Student Ambassador program at COD, which is similar to the WHS Student Ambassador program that Ms. Zelisko sponsors. Below, Ms. Almaria and Ms. Zelisko pose for a picture with a former (left) and current (right) WHS Student Ambassador. After the morning presentations about COD admissions and programs, WHS students received campus tours from the COD Student Ambassadors.

Additionally, we would like to extend our thanks to our two ISAC representatives, Rebecca Cook and Caitlin Moloney, for joining us today during our field trip and for leading a follow-up activity with our students on how to be successful in college.

Academic Growth
Posted: 02/26/2010
During our district-wide Institute Day on Friday, February 26th, George Schlott, the senior ACT consultant in the state of Illinois, presented ACT information to teachers.
One of the topics discussed was the level of appropriate academic growth from year to year. Growth can be seen by reviewing and comparing individual students' test scores throughout their high school experience. This type of review is constantly being completed by the WHS Guidance Department during individual appointments with students. The EXPLORE, PLAN, Practice ACT exams, and the PSAE (which includes the ACT) are all administered to WHS students, and the results from these tests help the entire WHS school community provide appropriate academic support to our students.

Course Selection Review Forms
Posted: 02/24/2010
All 2010-2011 WHS students have had an opportunity to meet with their guidance counselor for their scheduled course selection appointment. These meetings were very positive, and we would like to thank all of the parents who joined us. Each year, we have more and more parents participate in these appointments and contact us in the Guidance Department with questions. We are always happy to assist in any way that we can to help students make the most appropriate academic choices for the following school year.
In the next few days, individual students' course requests will be printed and mailed home to parents. We ask that this information is carefully reviewed and approved by signing the attached form. A copy of the Course Request Review Form can be viewed here.
This approval form will be due to students' 1st period teachers (or advisory teachers if they are in 8th grade) on Friday, March 19th.
We hope that 100% of these forms will be returned. Please keep in mind that the course selection choices each student makes determine the staffing levels, class sizes, section numbers offered, and periods in which courses are offered for the 2010-2011 school year.

Practice ACT for Juniors
Posted: 02/02/2010
On Thursday, February 4th, ALL WHS JUNIORS will be taking a practice ACT exam. They will be in testing rooms from 8:00 a.m. until 12:35 p.m. in order to reflect an actual ACT testing experience.
Since this is a scheduled SIP Day, all WHS students will be dismissed at 12:35 p.m. Seniors, sophomores, and freshmen are required to be in school this Thursday as they will be attending to their regular schedules. Bells will not ring that day due to testing, no announcements will be read, and all senior, sophomore, and freshman students are encouraged to be especially quiet during passing periods.
On our 1st Universal Testing Day on Thursday, November 5th, 2009, all juniors took a practice ACT exam for the first time this school year. This Thursday, they will take another practice test, which will be a different version from the one they took in November. We would like to take this time to thank the Kaplan organization for providing these practice tests.
To support our school wide events, our WHS PBIS team has created a short PBIS lesson that will be shared with juniors during their English 11 classes today, February 2nd. This PBIS lesson focuses on what students should expect during their testing experience as well as what will be expected of them. Reminders about eating a good breakfast, arriving to school on time, and bringing #2 pencils and a calculator will also be shared.
Please feel free to check out this presentation (it is attached here as a PDF document).
Finally, a list of testing room assignments has been posted outside the Guidance Department. Juniors are encouraged to review this list and be aware of where they are supposed to be at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday.

National School Counseling Week
Posted: 02/01/2010
National School Counseling Week 2010, "Celebrate School Counseling," will be celebrated from February 1-5, 2010, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by ASCA (American School Counseling Association), highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
Congress Passes National School Counseling Week Resolutions: Both the House and Senate passed resolutions declaring February 1-5, 2010, as National School Counseling Week to honor the important role school counselors play in students' lives. Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.) and Rep. Vernon Ehlers (R-Mich.) introduced the resolution on the House side, and on the Senate side, S. Res. 381 was introduced by Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine). View Sanchez's speech introducing the resolution.
Our Westmont High School Guidance Department would like to take a moment during this important week to thank our WHS students, parents, and community members for all of their support. We would also like to thank our WHS administrators, teachers, and support staff for their continued communication and collaboration.
Have a wonderful week!

ACT Prep Options
Posted: 12/01/2009
For college bound students, the ACT (American College Test) is a critical step in beginning the college application process, as well as a part of the Prairie State Achievement Exam (PSAE), which is required for high school graduation throughout the state of Illinois. College admission representatives use the ACT score to screen students for admission. It is also a useful tool for guidance counselors in the college and career planning process.
The WHS Guidance Department wants to help and support our junior students so they can earn their best possible scores. Several options for ACT test preparation are available to WHS juniors:
• WHS ACT Prep class (registration materials attached in this letter)
• Kaplan ACT Prep class at Westmont High School
o http://www.kaptest.com
• ZAPS ACT Prep class at Westmont High School (on Saturday, January 23, 2010)
o NEW option for WHS students - http://www.zaps.com
• The Reading Tree, Inc. located in Downers Grove
o http://www.readingtreelearning.com
• The College of DuPage Test Prep located throughout DuPage county
o http://www.cod.edu/youth/testprep/index.htm
• ACT Online Prep internet-based program
o http://www.actstudent.org/onlineprep/index.html
More information about these ACT prep options is included in this attached ACT Prep handout.
We would like to strongly encourage ALL OF OUR JUNIORS to participate in some type of ACT test preparation, in addition to what they are already doing in their classes here. Sophomore and freshman students are also welcome to participate in many of these ACT prep opportunities. If you have questions about any of these options, please feel free to contact Mrs. Wyrostek, Ms. Zelisko, or Ms. Wanner.
Finally, we would also like to strongly encourage ALL OF OUR JUNIORS to take the ACT exam on Saturday, February 6, 2010. This exam will provide students with an official ACT score in addition to the ACT score they will receive from our April 28th ACT testing. The February 6th exam will be administered at Westmont High School to all juniors who register (and submit their registration fee) on the ACT website: http://www.actstudent.org/regist/index.html. Please make sure to register as soon as possible.
Again, please feel free to contact the WHS Guidance Department with any questions. All of this information will be reviewed in detail with all juniors during their individual guidance appointments. These appointments began on Monday, November 30th, and will continue through the first week of January. As always, parents are most welcome and encouraged to attend these meetings. Thank you for your support and cooperation in helping your students prepare for these very important exams.

Freshmen Guidance Appointments
Mrs. Wyrostek and Ms. Zelisko are in the process of concluding our freshmen guidance appointments. The goal of these meetings was to assist freshman students in their transition to high school. We would like to thank all of the freshman parents who joined us for these meetings.
Freshman Transition Groups
Through our weekly Response to Intervention (RtI) Data Team as well as our English 9 Team, select freshmen were recommended to participate in our annual Freshman Transition Groups. These groups have been providing a brief intervention to help freshmen utilize their resources and take advantage of specific strategies for academic success.
Junior Guidance Appointments
Juniors and their parents will be receiving information in the next few weeks about our upcoming junior guidance appointments. More information will be forthcoming. Please stay tuned.
Universal Testing Day Follow-Up
Our Universal Testing Day on Thursday, November 5th was a very positive testing experience for all WHS students.
All freshmen completed the EXPLORE test, all sophomores completed the PLAN test, and all juniors completed a practice ACT. These practice exams definitely helped exemplify our students’ college readiness. The results of these assessments will be utilized by teachers in their individual departments to make student recommendations during our upcoming course selection process.
Juniors' test scores will be returned to students during their upcoming junior guidance appointments. We anticipate that freshman and sophomore results will be returned to students and their families as soon as we receive these scores from the ACT organization.
