Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Van Erden
Welcome to AP Junior English and Junior English
My name is Judi Van Erden and I'm the Junior English teacher at WHS.
I love working with young people as they find connections that enhance their ability to consider issues and ideas from different perspectives at the same time they are building skills in reading, writing, and researching. I enjoy incorporating activities that set the stage for independent exploration and learning, but that are still rooted in academic rigor. And the best thing ever is when a student finds joy and self-satisfaction in making her or his discoveries.
Degrees and Qualifications
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of California at Santa Barbara; a teaching certification from the University of Missouri, Kansas City; and a Masters in English Studies from Elmhurst College.
I work as an AP Language and Composition reader (grader) every summer in Louisville, Kentucky.
I received two National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships to study the history of Native American cultures in New Mexico, and the importance of Chicago's Bronzeville to the African-American cultural experience.
I participated in the Exeter Humanities Institute in order to learn a discursive method of teaching called the Harkness Methods.
One of my greatest joys is learning about things that I can incorporate into my classroom and, hopefully, enhance the learning experience of all my students.
