DuPage Region Assistant Principal of the Year by the Illinois Principals Association for 2020: Kevin Weck

Kevin Weck

The hallways are mostly quiet at Westmont High School right now but the difficult circumstances of this school year is not stopping the educators from reaching students at Westmont High School.  Teachers congratulated Mr. Kevin Weck;  Assistant Principal and Dean of Students in the hallway as he checked in with small group of students there during this season.  He stops by classrooms and checks in with students and asks them about their lives. Even through masks and with distance he is able to connect.  He was recently named the DuPage Region Assistant Principal of the Year by the Illinois Principals Association for 2020. From over 200 assistant principals in the very talented DuPage County region Dr. Weck has been selected as the best and he has truly earned this honor.

He responded, “I am just the beneficiary of all the good things happening in our school with our students and teachers. Our students are working hard and achieving. I feel lucky but this is the result of the community in our district.”

From Mr. Balderman & Ms. VerVynck:

Kevin is very dedicated to the students, staff and parents of Westmont High School and to the entire CUSD 201 school community. He works hard to support our teachers and cares deeply about every student. His passion for students is reflected in his relationships and intense follow through to see that every student succeeds. From leading our student success data team, constantly problem-solving with teachers, students and families to carefully progress monitoring attendance and grades Kevin has achieved a tremendous track record of leadership accomplishments.

Dr. Weck has been a leader in establishing an environment and school culture that has led to Westmont High School attaining an overall 99% graduation rate which is one of the best in Illinois and the nation each of the seven years he has served as an administrator. Kevin has also been a leader in decreasing chronic absenteeism, almost completely eliminating drop outs and last year maintaining an incredible record of 99% of our 9th graders being on track for graduation. His hard work helped Westmont earn the Exemplary designation (highest rating) from the Illinois State Board of Education. His leadership on school climate has been crucial in seeing Westmont High School rank in the top 1% for Illinois High Schools on the 5 Essentials Survey. Dr. Weck’s leadership in curriculum and instruction were vital in Westmont being named a national model PLC school and earning the DuFour Award as the best Professional Learning Community in the United States.

Beyond all the accomplishments it is Kevin Weck’s love of students and his colleagues that sets him apart and contributed to him being named the Assistant Principal of the Year in our region. Even in difficult situations, he maintains care and respect for our students. Dr. Weck is an exceptional educational leader and most worthy of this honor.

While Dr. Weck is being honored as an individual, he fully recognizes that his success is tied to our entire team here at Westmont High School and CUSD 201.
